Twenty years ago, the Committee on Global Thought (CGT) was founded on a simple premise: a newly globalized world requires new concepts, not categories built for an earlier one. The Open Society Foundations (OSF) were built on the conviction that no one has a monopoly on truth, and works on behalf of more open, accountable, and democratic societies. Both institutions share a commitment to critical inquiry, to thinking across borders and disciplines, and to questioning received wisdom. But much has changed since both institutions were conceived. Globalization was expected to increase both open markets and democracy, but two decades later, statism and nationalism are resurgent and global cooperation is being dramatically reoriented. What does it mean to think about “the global” now?

As part of a series of events marking CGT’s 20th anniversary, CGT and OSF celebrate the publication of A World Run Aground, an anthology from OSF's The Ideas Letter. The book collects essays that question contemporary assumptions and resist easy answers, drawing on voices from across ideological lines and around the world. Join us for a conversation on new visions of globality and how to think about the world through our turbulent times.
